There is a massive Adidas production network around the world but before we jump into that let’s take a brief look at the history of the Adidas shoes brand.
About Adidas
Adidas was founded by Adolf Dassler in 1922. Dassler began making footwear in his mother’s laundry room in her home in Herzogenaurach Germany. Following WW1, his brother Rudolf partnered with him in 1924 and they started producing spiked running shoes.
The Dassler Brothers shoe manufacturing in Herzogenaurach Germany has been viewed by many to be Adidas’ initial manufacturing plant. Initially Dassler brothers shoes were named Dassler.
Dassler Shoes exploded in popularity when Adolf convinced US sprinter Jesse Owens to use his handmade spikes for the 1936 summer Olympics. Before the start of World War 2 the brothers were selling around 200,000 pairs of shoes a year.
In 1947 the Dassler brothers partnership fell apart due to a breakdown in the relationship between them. This led to Adolf Dassler officially starting the Adidas company in 1949. Rudolf founded Puma and the company would become one of Adidas’ main rivals for many years to come.
The Origin of the Adidas Brand Name
The Name Adidas comes from Adolf Dassler’s nick name of ‘Adi’ and the first three letters of his surname ‘Das’.
Adolf ‘Adi‘ Dassler = Adidas
The Three Stripes logo
The Adidas three stripes logo was actually acquired from another company called Karhu Sports in 1952.
The Trefoil logo was designed in 1971 and launched in 1972 for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. This logo lasted until 1997, when the company introduced the “three bars” logo (that had been designed by then Creative Director Peter Moore), initially used on the Equipment range of products but then adopted as the Adidas corporate logo.
The Trefoil logo is now used for the Adidas originals heritage line
